Hein Verbruggen, chairman of the IOC's Coordination Commission at the Beijing Games, said that the Chinese had gone further than their commitment to the IOC.

Journalists arriving in China to cover the Olympics during the week found access to a wide array of Internet sites, including Western news organisations and human rights groups, were banned.

China yesterday eased some of their censorship system but many sites are still blocked, including those linked to Chinese dissidents, the outlawed Falungong spiritual movement, the Tibetan government-in-exile and sites with information on the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.

Athletes withdraw over drugs

Two Romanian athletes have dropped out of the national Olympic team on suspicion of doping. 1,500 metres runners Elena Antoci and Cristina Vasiloiu said today they were retiring.

US swimmer Jessica Hardy has also withdrawn from the Games, after failing a dope test at trials last month.

The news follows the decision of the international athletics governing body last week to suspend seven leading Ruusian athletes for doping offences.

They are accused of fraudulent substitution of urine which is both a prohibited method and a form of tampering with the doping control process, the IAAF said on Thursday.

And the IOC confirmed today that the US 4x400m relay team that won gold in Sydney in 2000 have been stripped of their medals after team member Antonio Pettigrew admitted to doping.

It was the sixth US medal from the Sydney Games lost to doping in the past eight months after US sprinter Marion Jones was stripped of five medals following a doping confession.
