The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has confirmed that it is investigating the loss of a laptop from the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General.

RTÉ News understands that the laptop, which contained personal information including details about IDA companies in Ireland, went missing at a bus stop.

An investigation into the incident is now underway and the ODPC says the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) is co-operating fully.

It says the incident was reported early last month.

The Comptroller and Auditor General's office is responsible for auditing and reporting on the accounts of public bodies and examines how they administer their funding.

A total of 16 Office laptop computers have been stolen in the period from 1 January 1999 to date. One of these computers was recovered.
