Police in Jersey say the remains of at least five children aged between four and 11 have been found in the search of a former children's home.
Teeth and bone fragments were found in underground rooms at the former home at Haut de la Garenne.
Police have evidence the remains were burned, and that attempts were made to conceal them in the late 1960s or early 1970s.
Around 100 people have made allegations of abuse at the home.
The deputy Chief Officer Lenny Harper, who is leading the investigation, said that difficulties with dating the fragments mean that a murder inquiry is unlikely.
So far three people have been charged with sexual offences against young boys and girls as part of the inquiry.
