His initial appearance has been scheduled to take place at 3pm Irish time, before Judge Alphons Orie.

The former Bosnian Serb leader was flown overnight from Belgrade to the Netherlands for transfer to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

He is facing charges of crimes against humanity and genocide during the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s.

The charges include masterminding the shelling of Sarajevo and the massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995.

In a statement this morning, Serbia's justice ministry said authorisation for the move was preceded by the decision of the District Court in Belgrade that all conditions have been met for handing over Mr Karadzic to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

He was put on a plane which left Belgrade at about 3.30am this morning Irish time.
