Traffic authorities in Beijing have introduced drastic traffic rules to try to remove more than 1m cars from the streets ahead of next month's Olympic Games.

The move is part of the city's fight against pollution and congestion and restricts residents to using their cars on alternate days.

Officials hope about half of the city's estimated 3.3m cars will be forced off the road over the next two months.
