The construction employment index, which measures employment by firms with five or more staff, fell by 14.8% in the year from May 2007 to May 2008.

It is the lowest reading since the index began in the year 2000.

However, the CSO says it is a short term indicator of employment in the sector.

The figures have been released amid fears for the jobs of many builders as they begin their traditional holidays today.
