Cork developer Owen O'Callaghan has denied that payments to his lobbyist Frank Dunlop were linked to local elections.

Counsel for the Mahon Tribunal were questioning Mr O'Callaghan about notes made on records of payments totaling £80,000 in 1991.

Owen O'Callaghan said he paid Frank Dunlop £80,000 in one three week period up to June 1991 for lobbying work concerning the Quarryvale development.

He said he regarded the fees as high.

But he denied there was any connection with the June 1991 elections.

Mr O'Callaghan was asked about handwritten notes on company payment records which said referred to the money being for the election including 'pamplets etc'.

Mr O'Callaghan said this was because he was conscious that Mr Dunlop would be getting requests for assistance at this time.

But he denied this was what he was paying the money for.

He was also asked about a reference to there being no invoices.

He said this was simply that he had been asked for them and just had not looked for them.
