Elephants saved from mucky end in India

watch

Two elephants in eastern India had a lucky escape when they were rescued by villagers who saved them from drowning.

The elephants had fallen into a well near the village of Satuli, but torrential rain had made the surrounding ground too muddy for them to climb out.

Villagers who normally complain about the local herd for damaging their crops made several attempts to help them out with the aid of branches and ropes.

Eventually they succeeded and the animals, which are highly revered in India, managed to escape, scattering the crowd of onlookers and helpers.
