A man has appeared before Tullamore District Court charged with the murder of 83-year-old Christy Hanley in Co Westmeath in May.
Noel Cawley, 46, of no fixed abode was arrested on O'Connell Street in Dublin last Tuesday.
He was taken to Athlone Garda Station where he was charged with the murder of the pensioner at Bridge Street, Kilbeggan.
Detective Sergeant Eamonn Curley told the special sitting of the court late last night that when charged the accused had nothing to say.
Judge John Neilan remanded Mr Cawley in custody.
At the request of his solicitor, the judge recommended to the Governor of Cloverhill Prison that he be kept in isolation from other prisoners due to fears for his safety expressed in court.
