Plans to abolish early houses have been abandoned by the Government.

Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said he had modified legislative proposals on drinking that would have seen an end to such pubs.

Mr Ahern told the Dáil last night that he was now disposed to allowing pubs with existing early licences to retain them.

If passed, the new Intoxicating Liquor Bill would impose restrictions on off-licences and force clubs operating under theatre licences until 4am to close earlier.

It would also allow gardaí seize alcohol from drinkers they believe are likely to cause a nuisance in public places.

Mr Ahern said the reprieve for early houses would only apply to pubs that already had such a licence.

There are thought to be around 50 early houses around the country. No new ones have been opened since 1962.

The ban on early houses had been recommended by the Alcohol Advisory Group last March.
