Parents to discuss School of Music cuts

Parents concerned at planned cuts in teaching hours at Cork School of Music are to hold a public meeting in the school tonight.

It is less than a year since the flagship €62m school building was officially opened after years of campaigning by parents, teaching staff and students.

School management last week confirmed that 2,000 teaching hours are to be cut for budgetary reasons, which will see cutbacks on enrolments from September.

The cuts will affect primary and secondary level students who make up more than half of the school's student population.

In a statement, the school's parents' association said the meeting was being held so that people can express their views and concerns. Local politicians have also been invited.

The school falls under the management umbrella of the Cork Institute of Technology.

Earlier this month, President Brendan Murphy said the cuts would be minimal.
