Several events took place in Dublin today to celebrate Bloomsday, which marks the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyce's novel Ulysses takes place.

Minster for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen was just one of those in attendance at the annual Bloomsday Breakfast in the James Joyce Centre on North Great George's Street.

Joyce fans dressed in Edwardian costume gathered for readings and performances of extracts from Ulysses.

Minster Cullen paid tribute to the work of the literary great and those involved in running the festival.

He said: 'Bloomsday has caught the public and literary imagination and has become a day on which fans of James Joyce celebrate the man and his unique skill as a wordsmith. Bloomsday has grown into a significant event for our capital.'

The festival has been running since last week. Further events planned for today included a performance by the Joyce in Voice group of the music from Ulysses.
