Teachers' union ASTI has expressed extreme concern over reports that Integrate Ireland Language and Training is to close.

Integrate Ireland is a private company designated by the State to provide language training to teachers with children from other countries in their schools.

ASTI says schools and teachers need to be informed about alternatives being put in place by the Department of Education.

The union has described the closure of Integrate Ireland as a very serious development.

It says it gives added urgency to the need for an intercultural strategy to be developed by the department.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said this evening that they cannot confirm whether or not funding to Integrate Ireland has been cut.
