Several hundred Irish families throughout the country will host the children, who come from the heart of the Chernobyl zone in western Russia and Belarus.

Some children will also receive specialist medical care at the Barretstown Camp in Co Kildare.

Their visit is part of the Chernobyl Children's Project International Summer Rest & Recuperation Programme, which was established in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 22 years ago.
