The body of a man has been recovered from the River Shannon in Limerick City this evening.

A search operation had been underway since 6pm after a man went swimming in an area of the river between the metal bridge and Barrack Lane boat club along the new road on the Thomandgate area of the city.

It is understood he had swam a width of the river but got into difficulty when trying to return to the riverbank.

The alarm was raised by a friend who was swimming with him.

A team from the Limerick Marine Search & Rescue has conducted a number of searches in the area where the man was last seen

It is understood the missing man is in his 20s and from the area.
