Speaking at the Fianna Fáil 1916 commemoration at Arbour Hill, Mr Ahern said accomplishing peace in Northern Ireland was the proudest achievement of his political career.

He said he entered politics in 1977 and since then thousands had died and thousands more were injured because of the conflict.

Mr Ahern said none of that violence was ever justified and this generation must now ensure that violence will never again be used to advance political aims.
