Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W Bush, at their final summit, have said they have made some progress towards resolving differences over US plans to build a missile system in Europe.
After talks at the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, Mr Putin said Moscow remained fundamentally opposed to the proposed missile shield.
For his part, Mr Bush acknowledged the need for more work to persuade Vladimir Putin that the missile system was not aimed at Russia.
The meeting comes a month before Mr Putin is due to leave office.
Russian President-elect Dmitry Medvedev also met Mr Bush, saying he hoped to continue advancing Russia-US relations.
Mr Bush and Mr Putin are likely to sign a 'strategic framework' on future relations between their countries.
They are not expected to clinch agreement on the missile system.
