The Taoiseach has said people should not be complacent over the forthcoming EU Treaty referendum.

Bertie Ahern told the IMI National Conference in Co Wicklow that EU membership has been hugely beneficial.

He said it had influenced many facets of the Irish economy and society, providing significant funding when it was needed.

He said he wanted to emphasise the vital importance of a Yes vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.

The referendum is expected to be held on 12 June.
