Two firms to create 270 Waterford jobs

Two companies have announced that they will create 270 new jobs in Waterford city and county.

US biotechnology company Genzyme has announced plans for a major investment in its facility in Waterford city, creating an additional 170 jobs there.

It already employs over 400 people at the plant, producing products and services for people with rare inherited disorders.

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, has announced that the company, which has been in Waterford since 2001, now plans to invest a further €130m expanding its manufacturing and laboratory operations.

It will create 170 jobs over the next three years.

In Dungarvan, US giant Lancaster Laboratories has confirmed that, with its takeover of Irish company Microchem, 100 new jobs are to be created in the town by 2013.

Microchem already employs 100 people at its test and research laboratories in the town.
