A Limerick pharmacist has been granted an injunction preventing the Health Service Executive from reducing the amount it reimburses him for the wholesale mark up of drugs.
The injunction granted by the High Court relates only to five pharmacies run by Niall O'Sullivan in Limerick, who claimed he would go out of business if the reduction came into effect.
He said he did not believe he could survive in business any length of time if the proposed cuts are implemented, and he served protective notice on 43 employees.
The HSE reduced the amount it reimburses to pharmacies under the Community Drugs Scheme from almost 18% to 8% at the beginning of this month.
The decision may encourage other pharmacists to seek similar injunctions.
