Sudan and Chad have signed a non-aggression pact aimed at halting five years of hostilities.

The agreement commits the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his Chadian counterpart Idriss Deby not to support rebel movements operating on either side of the border between them.

However five previous accords have failed to reconcile the two countries, so far, and it is unlikely that the latest one will provide a breakthrough.

There are 50 Irish Rangers deployed to Chad in the past few weeks based in Abeche, 965km from the capital N'Djamena.
