The owners of the Villager pub in Chapelizod in Dublin have paid tribute to the two unarmed gardaí who tackled an armed raider last night.

The two officers disarmed a man carrying a sawn-off shotgun shortly before 1am.

After receiving a call that a robbery was in progress, the two gardaí first had to scale a 6m wall at the back of the pub before gaining access to the bar.

A barman and a number of patrons were in the pub when the gunman was tackled by the officers at the store room.

'The gardaí were incredible, they didn't hesitate in tackling the man,' said an owner of the pub.

'A number of armed gardaí arrived a short time after the emergency call was made, but the two gardaí to arrive first were unarmed and were extremely brave for what they did.'

A man arrested after the attempted robbery is in custody at Ballyfermot Garda Station.
