President Mwai Kibaki has urged Kenya's divided parliament to set aside partisanship and enshrine into law a power-sharing pact to end a bloody post-election crisis.

Mr Kibaki appealed for reconciliation and forgiveness ahead of today's first parliament meeting since the signing of the deal with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The power-sharing pact was designed to end turmoil after Mr Kibaki's disputed re-election on 27 December.

The result ignited looting, riots and politically-tinged ethnic clashes in which more than 1,000 people were killed and 300,000 displaced.

President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga struck a deal on 28 February, after weeks of mediation led by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The agreement broke the deadlock by granting the opposition the position of prime minister, which has yet to be formally created, but both sides are still involved in intense negotiations on issues such as land reform.

Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement outpaced Mr Kibaki's Party of National Unity in the December elections, but fell short of securing an outright majority.

Alliances with smaller parties by both camps have resulted in an almost evenly-split parliament, with Mr Odinga's allies dominating by a narrow margin.

Both sides have pledged to support the legislation.
