The Environmental Protection Agency's Director General has told the Oireachtas Committee on Climate Change that if plans to reduce car usage were not implemented then Ireland's transport emissions were set to go through the roof.

Dr Mary Kelly said that unless drastic action was taken Ireland's emissions from transport would increase by 265%.

Currently, she said, Ireland is 180% above the 1990 levels.
