The Irish Cattle & Sheep Farmers' Association has said beef is still scarce and farmers should bargain hard for higher prices from factories.

Demand for beef exceeds supply across Europe, ICSA beef chairman Sean Scully says, and supermarkets are beginning to accept that the beef price must rise higher.

The ICSA, representing 9,000 commercial cattle and sheep farmers, says it is annoyed that 106 Brazilian farms have been temporarily approved, pending inspections.

The ban on importing Brazilian beef into the EU was lifted earlier this week.

Last month, imports from Brazil were completely banned because they did not meet the same production requirements as meat from European farms.

But Irish farmers can be reassured that Brazilian beef will have very little impact in the marketplace in the short-term, Mr Scully said.

'The number of Brazilian farm approvals is very low and their price is much higher than before. This is more of a political gesture to get WTO back on track than something of any real consequence in the marketplace,' he said.
