A much higher level of welfare benefit fraud has been found among foreign claims than among claims from Irish nationals.

The Department of Social & Family Affairs is planning to implement tougher controls on all benefit payments.

The Comptroller and Auditor General John Purcell has told the Public Accounts Committee that a random survey of claims showed 14.4% of claims from foreign nationals were fraudulent, compared with 2.6% from Irish nationals.
