Gardaí and Luas operator Veolia Transport have begun investigations into the death of a man who was struck by a Luas at the weekend.
The man has been named as Anthony Creed of Bawnlea Close, Tallaght.
It is the first time someone has died in an incident involving the trams since they began operating in 2004.
The incident happened on the Luas red line between the Hospital and Tallaght stops on Cookstown Way on Saturday night.
Mr Creed, in his 50s, was struck by the tram which was travelling in the direction of Tallaght just before 7pm.
He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Tallaght hospital where he died yesterday morning.
A spokesperson for Veolia Transport says an investigation into the incident has been established.
She said the investigation could take a number of weeks and that Veolia will work with other agencies including the Railway Safety Agency in establishing the background to the incident.
The company has extended its sympathy to the family and friends of Mr Creed.
