Gardaí now say their initial assessment of the device is that it is an elaborate hoax.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces says tests on the pipe bomb style device which was discovered in Fairview Park earlier today are complete and have been sent to the gardaí.

The Defence Forces described the device which was found beside a park bench as having all the hallmarks of a 'viable' device.

It was destroyed in a controlled explosion on site.

Diversions in the area, which had caused severe traffic congestion, have now been lifted.

The Clontarf Road at Fairview Park has also been reopened.
