Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has said that weekend polls show that support for the two main Government parties is holding up.
Mr Ahern said he was amused by coverage of his own ratings. He said that when he was far ahead over the last decade it was relegated to page 15. However he said when his ratings slipped it was on page one.
Mr Ahern would not be drawn on the likely shape of a Government counter-measure to an Opposition motion commending the work of the Mahon Tribunal. This is due for debate when the Dáil returns this week.
He also confirmed that the cabinet had decided against a compensation tribunal for the victims of swimming coach Derry O'Rourke.
However he admitted that that would leave the organisation Swim Ireland with a big problem.
Mr Ahern said the legal advice was that such a move would expose the State to a wide range of claims.
