Origin of hoax package investigated

watch

A garda investigation is continuing tonight into the origin of a suspicious package left at the doorstep of a Dublin City centre hotel.

The alert forced the evacuation of up to 2,500 people from the surrounding area for three hours last night.

The object found outside the Clifton Court Hotel last night was later found to be an elaborate hoax.

It was destroyed in a controlled explosion by the army bomb-disposal team shortly after 1am.

A defence forces spokesman said that it contained no explosive content.

Further forensic tests are due to be carried out on the object.

The device was discovered at the hotel just after 11pm last night.
