Harolds Cross suspect to be assessed

A 24-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man who was stabbed to death in an apartment in Harolds Cross in south Dublin last weekend.

Detective Inspector Gearoid Begley said he arrested Thomas Connors from Manor Court in Harolds Cross at 12.47am this morning.

He made no reply when charged with the murder of Michael Hughes.

Michael Hughes, 30, from Banagher in Co Offaly, was stabbed to death in the Manor Villas apartments early last Saturday morning.

There were no garda objections and Thomas Connors' solicitor asked the judge to direct he receive immediate medical assistance in Clover Hill and a psychiatric assessment regarding his fitness to plead.

Judge Hugh O' Donnell then ordered Mr Connors be psychiatrically assessed.

He granted him free legal aid and remanded him in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court tomorrow.
