A fourth man has been arrested in connection with the seizure of over €3m worth of heroin in Co Louth on Friday.

The seizure was made in Collon as part of an ongoing investigation into an international drug trafficking gang involving Gardaí, the PSNI and police in the Netherlands.

The man was arrested on foot of a European arrest warrant issued by the Dutch authorities. He is being held at Lucan Garda Station.

Meanwhile a 45-year-old man who was being questioned in Navan Garda Station in connection with the seizure has been released and a file will be sent to the DPP.

Earlier a 27-year-old man was remanded in custody charged in connection with the seizure.

Francis Hynes of Kilmeage, Co Kildare, is charged with having heroin for sale or supply at Collon.

Judge John Brophy refused bail at Navan District Court today.

He told the defendant he could apply for free legal aid when he appears at Cloverhill District Court next Friday.

Another man, who is 43, was arrested in Northern Ireland. He is now charged with unlawful importation and supply of heroin, and is due before Newry Magistrates tomorrow.

Separately in Cork, four men who were arrested following two separate seizures of cannabis on Friday have been released.

Gardaí say a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
