A report published today shows that energy consumption in the transport sector grew by 7% last year.
Some parts of the economy cut emissions in 2006, but the increased pollution from the transport sector resulted in an overall increase for the country.
Sustainable Energy Ireland found that overall energy use grew by 1% last year, while emissions increased by 0.5%.
In the next four years, Ireland will produce 65 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Transport now accounts for more than one third of energy related emissions.
In 2006 car ownership increased by almost 5%.
Since 1990 Irish levels of car ownership have grown by more than 50%.
