FG penalty point motion defeated

The Dáil has rejected a Fine Gael motion that was critical of the penalty point system for drivers.

The party's proposal, that gardaí be made responsible for taking possession of driving licences where the holder had the maximum 12 penalty points, was rejected.

At present these drivers must voluntarily hand over their licences.
