Gore calls for markets to help climate

watch

Al Gore has said global markets could become a leading tool for halting global warming. His comments come the day before he is to receive the Nobel Peace Prize  for his work on climate change

Mr Gore, who will receive the prize along with the UN climate panel, called for taxes on CO2 emissions and the creation of a global emissions trading market to help stem global warming.

Mr Gore said it was essential for each country to tax CO2 emissions.

Meanwhile countries at the UN climate change conference in Bali failed to agree on a plan to open up trade in green goods. Brazil feared a major US/EU proposal raised on the fringes of climate talks was a protectionist ruse.

At the end of two days of talks involving officials from 32 countries, a final news conference descended into farce as Brazil and the US swapped recriminations.
