A man has been killed and a woman seriously injured in a two car collision in Galway.

The man who died was the driver of one of the vehicles which collided on the Quincentennial Bridge shortly before 8pm.

The driver and two passengers in the other car were injured and taken to University College Hospital.

One of the passengers, a woman, is said to be critically ill.

The bridge will remain closed until 4am or 5am, diversions are in place and the accident has caused widespread delays in the city.

Garda technical examinations will continue to examine the scene throughout the night.

Meanwhile, in Kildare a woman in her 60s was killed in a hit and run collision just before 7.30pm this evening.

TShe was a cyclist and was killed after being struck by a van which which failed to stop. 

A 26-year-old man was later arrested by Gardaí in connection with the investigation and the van was recovered.
