A 44-year-old man has appeared in court in Sligo charged with possession of a substantial number of child abuse images.
Gary Smith of 9 Ashbrook, Pearse Road in Sligo was arrested last night and brought before the court this morning on two charges of possessing child abuse images on memory sticks, computer media and hard drives.
He is alleged to have been in possession of the images on 1 January at the offices of MSL Networks, Stephen St in Sligo and at his address in Ashbrook.
The court was told that Mr Smith had nothing to say in reply to the charges.
The Book of Evidence has been served in the case and Mr Smith is being sent forward for trial at the circuit court.
His solicitor, Gerry McGovern, said that given the seriousness of the charges he was applying for senior counsel for the case and this was granted.
Mr Smith was also granted free legal aid and remanded on his own bail of €500 to the circuit court in Sligo in January.
