Nine News: Tommy Gorman, Northern Editor, reports that news of the invitation to the Taoiseach emerged during a US visit by Northern ministers
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is expected to address the joint houses of the US congress in Washington early next year.
News that the invitation is being issued to Mr Ahern came from the speaker of the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi.
She made the announcement during a function for Northern Ireland First Minister and Deputy First Minister, Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness.
