New apartment standards increasing the minimum size by up to 25% are now law after they were formally passed by Dublin City Council this evening.
The standards have now been imposed as a requirement for planning permission despite concerns expressed by builders and architects during a final consultation period.
The guidelines also stipulate minimum standards in relation ceiling height, storage space and play areas.
They also require apartments to be dual aspect unless this is physically impossible in which case there has to be compensation in the design.
Architects claim that schemes will have to be around 40% bigger to cope with these requirements while builders say they will make apartments more expensive.
