EU: Fewer people at risk of poverty

There has been a slight decrease in the number of people at risk of poverty, according to statistics published today.

The EU survey on Income and Living Conditions for 2006 found that 17% of the population were at risk of poverty, down from 18.5% in 2005.

There was a significant decrease in the at risk of poverty rate for the elderly, which was 13.6%, down from 20.1% the previous year.

According to the survey average net disposable household income rose by 7.8% to €836.44 per week.

However, the figures also show that 9% of the population experienced debt problems arising from ordinary living expenses.
