US president George W Bush met Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Washington today.

The meetings came ahead of tomorrow's Middle East summit in Annapolis, Maryland.

He will also address an evening dinner for delegates to the summit later this evening.

The US is attempting to kick-start stalled talks on a final peace settlement between the Palestinians and the Israelis and to begin work on the stalled 'road map to peace', which would lead to an independent Palestinian state.

Almost 50 countries and organisations will attend tomorrow's conference, including Syria and Saudi Arabia.

However, hopes of substantial progress are not high.

The Palestinian side is split, with Hamas opposed to the talks.

On the Israeli side, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is under a criminal investigation and faces domestic political problems.
