A total of nine women have now been diagnosed with breast cancer after previously being given the all clear at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

It was confirmed today that two more women had been diagnosed with the disease after new tests. Seven women had already been misdiagnosed at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Minister for Health Mary Harney has confirmed that the specialist who is preparing a report for the HSE on the issue was on a panel that interviewed the consultant at the centre of the misdiagnosis controversy.

Dr Anne O' Doherty was part of the interview panel that appointed consultant radiologist Visa Moodley to the Midland Regional Hospital. Dr Moodley is currently on leave.

Ms Harney has said that women can have the utmost confidence in the clinical review of over 3,000 mammograms conducted by consultant radiologist, Dr O'Doherty and two colleagues.

The minister said that Dr O' Doherty had an international reputation as a breast radiologist.
