Test results on six women, to determine if they were given a correct breast cancer diagnosis in the Midland Regional Hospital, will made available next week.

On Monday, Minister for Health Mary Harney had suggested that the results of these tests were expected this week.

But this afternoon the HSE confirmed that the tests were still ongoing and the results would be available this week.

A spokesperson said 'the tests take as long as they take. We just have to wait and hear'. She said the six women in question were aware of the timeframe involved.

Their mammograms were among 3,000 sent by the HSE for external examination after concerns were raised about the diagnosis of breast cancer at the hospital.

So far, a review of scans reported on by a number of consultant radiologists at the hospital since November 2003 has found that seven women were wrongly given the all clear.
