Bird flu confirmed in eastern England

The H5 strain of bird flu has been confirmed in England in turkeys on a farm near Diss, in Norfolk.

The H5 strain of bird flu has been confirmed in England in turkeys on a farm near Diss, in Norfolk.

Some 5,000 birds are being slaughtered at the farm, which has ducks and geese as well as turkeys.

3km protection and 10km surveillance zones have been set up around the premises.

Preliminary tests showed the turkeys had the H5 strain of bird flu, but it is not yet known whether it is the highly pathogenic H5N1 form of the disease.
