The Taoiseach and Minister for Transport have officially opened the new Pier D at Dublin Airport.

The new €120m facility will cater for around 27,000 passengers every day.

According to the Dublin Airport Authority, Pier D will make the experience of passengers on low-cost airlines much better.

Six of Pier D's 12 boarding gates open today and the remainder will open early next year.

Around 10m passengers can use the facility each year, or half the number of passengers that currently use the airport.

Pier D will be used mainly by short-haul aircraft on routes to Britain and continental Europe.

The development of Pier D is part of a €2bn investment by the Dublin Airport Authority over the next decade.
