Two brothers from Laois have been charged in connection with an assault on a farmer in 2006 who has since died.

Jason Byrne, aged 30, of Borness, Mountmellick, Co Laois, and his brother 36-year-old Daniel Byrne of the same address appeared before Judge Eamonn O'Brien at Portarlington District Court this morning charged with assault on Eddie Dempsey on 18 December 2006.

Supt Philip Lyons told the court circumstances had arisen that meant he would now be seeking further directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Judge O'Brien remanded the Byrne brothers on continuing bail until 5 February next year.

Eddie Dempsey of Moneyguid in Killeigh, Co Offaly, formerly of Strahard in Mountmellick, was hospitalised after the incident near Mountmellick in December 2006 and died in September of this year.
