The US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, has said Russian President Vladimir Putin's hardline stance against US missile defence plans in Europe are fairly troubling.
Mr Gates said they were at odds with private comments Mr Putin made to US officials.
At a summit with EU leaders in Portugal yesterday, Mr Putin likened the dispute to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis and said Washington was creating threats near its borders.
