Mahon Tribunal - Bruton say Dunlops evidence rang a bell in his mind

Former Taoiseach John Bruton has told the Mahon Tribunal he now remembers Frank Dunlop telling him of a request for money from a Fine Gael councillor and replying that the world is not populated by angels.

Mr Bruton admitted that on two previous occasions he strenuously denied to the Mahon Tribunal that  this conversation took place.

However the former Fine Gael leader said it was Mr Dunlop's evidence last week that rang a bell in his mind.

Particularly Mr Dunlop's reference to neither the world nor Fine Gael being populated by angels.

Mr Dunlop said Fine Gael councillor the late Tom Hand had demanded £250,000 to support the Quarryvale development.

And that he complained to the Mr Bruton about the councillors request for a substantial amount during a Fine Gael fundraiser in May 1993.

Today, Mr Bruton testified that he does not remember Mr Hand's name being mentioned but that was he was taken aback by the allegation.

However he said he suspected Mr Dunlop's motives and did not see what he could do about it.

Speaking afterwards Mr Bruton said he now regrets not investigating the matter further.
