A High Court action by Frank McBrearty Senior against the Garda Commissioner, the State and the Attorney General has got under way in Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Mr McBrearty is suing for damages for financial losses suffered by his pub and nightclub business in Raphoe, Co Donegal, as a result of the actions of the gardaí.
He is claiming a total of €7.2m.
The State has accepted liability in the case and the court is to now decide the extent of damages to be awarded.
Today Mr McBrearty told the court the campaign against his family had catastrophic effects on the prospects of his business.
