Job losses at Cork cheese plant

Breeo Foods has announced that it is to close its cheese production plant in Mitchelstown with the loss of 20 jobs.

The company made the announcement as its pig production plant finally closed after 40 years producing pig meat for brands such as Galtee and Shaws.

Four years ago it employed almost 500 people and today local pig producers staged a protest outside the plant.

In a statement issued in the past hour the company said it had taken the decision because it was no longer viable to process cheese in the plant.

Production of well known cheeses such as Calvita will now be outsourced.

Dairygold once employed over 1000 people locally but now employs just 350 after a major restructuring programme over the past four years.
